Upright – The Sun is a card of youthfulness, children and music, of clear thought and the feeling that all is right in the universe. Glory, gain, triumph, pleasure, truth, success. As the moon symbolized inspiration from the unconscious, from dreams, this card symbolizes discoveries made fully conscious and wide awake. This is science and math, beautifully constructed music, carefully reasoned philosophy. It is a card of intellect, clarity of mind, and feelings of youthful energy.
Upside-down - Reverse the card and the Sun sinks down instead of rising up. The innocence, wisdom and clarity of childhood loses stability. The Sun provides life to flowers and to people; if it is reversed and going down, then its light and warmth is fading, and so is the life it supports. This is a fading Sun it suggests that you are either unable to recapture youth and childhood or that you are refusing to see the light. There is a suggestion here that you would rather be in shadow, than see what the light might show you.
Creature – A phoenix is a mythical bird that is a fire spirit with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet. It has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self. The Phoenix has long been presented as a symbol of rebirth, immortality, and renewal.
